| Born
and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, I graduated
from Harvard College in 1998 and the Harvard School
of Public Health in 2003 with a doctorate in Epidemiology.
As an undergraduate I majored in English and American
Literature and Language, but also worked in a biochemistry
research laboratory. My doctoral dissertation focused
on the role of the immune system and the Epstein-Barr
virus in the development of Hodgkin's lymphoma.
I'm now a post-doc in the Department of Medical
Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Karolinska
Institute in Stockholm, where I'll be spending two
years researching risk factors for |

Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Specifically,
I'll be comparing personal characteristics, medical
history, and other interview-based information, as well
as blood and DNA samples, between 3,000 people with
lymphoma and an equal number of people

without
lymphoma, in order to determine how the two groups
differ. I'm also now helping to start up a new
epidemiologic study of nasopharyngeal carcinoma
in Southern China.
In
my spare time I'm still an avid fan of books as
well as movies and music, making Stockholm an
ideal place to be. I also enjoy biking, running,
playing tennis, and being outdoors. I'm very grateful
for the support of the American Women's Club,
and look forward to meeting everyone!

Hello
AWC,
I am originally from Charleston, South Carolina where
I attended the University of South Carolina as an undergrad.
I am currently a Ph.D. student in Socio-Cultural Anthropology
at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. I will
be here in Sweden through June 2004, conducting dissertation
research while affiliated with Stockholm University. Mainly
through interviews, my project will explore the experiences
of African-Americans living in Sweden. This scholarship
will enable me to venture outside of Stockholm and to
conduct additional interviews in Kiruna and Malmö.
A big Thank You! to the AWC for this opportunity! |
