Thanksgiving Luncheon & Fundraiser
November 23, 2024 at 12:30
This year’s event won’t be just a fun-raiser, but also a fundraiser for the COBEC Treeducation Fund!
Judy Petersen has generously offered to accommodate our luncheon in her festvåning this year. It’s easy to get there: simply take the red line to Ropsten and then a bus one stop to Torsvikstorg (detailed instructions will be sent when you RSVP). Arrive at 12:30 for a drink and plan to eat around 1 pm. Please bring one or more guests — this is a family event! Our menu will be lovingly prepared by Cayenne Catering and will consist of roasted turkey, roasted sweet potatoes, bread stuffing, butter Brussels sprouts, gravy, cranberry sauce, cornbread with fresh creme cheese, and apple pie with vanilla sauce. A vegetarian alternative main course will also be available. Wine, nonalcoholic drinks, coffee, and tea will be served. The price is 420 kr per person, payable in advance to the AWC by Bank Giro at 377-9444 or by Swish to 123 465 9793. Children under 12 eat free.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we will also hold a silent auction to support the COBEC Treeducation Fund. COBEC stands for Community Based Environmental Conservation Organization and has three main initiatives: conservation, education, and research. One of their biggest projects is mangrove restoration where they work with the Kenyan Forestry Service and coastal communities. Our 2024-25 scholarship recipient, Annie Lane, describes her work with COBEC:
As someone who taught English for eight years in South Korea, I believe that education is the first step into obtaining a better, brighter future. When I interned at COBEC for 3 months last summer, I learned about the “Treeducation Fund,” and how this was a community inspired initiative. Mothers who are regularly involved with COBEC’s mangrove planting activities spoke with the COBEC team about the stress they have to pay for their children’s school fees. Thus the Treeducation Fund was developed! The Treeducation Fund requires every beneficiary to set aside an area of land to plant mangroves on their farm and ensure the survival of the trees. If she/he is able to do that, COBEC pays their children’s school tuition for up to four years. COBEC hopes to empower children to break the cycle of poverty through education and to also promote environmental sustainability by restoring ecosystems.
The auction will feature items that Annie purchased while in Kenya last summer. More information about the Treeducation Fund will be available at our luncheon.
