Thinking about joining AWC Stockholm, or just curious what membership actually involves? Here's the practical rundown.
Eligibility
What do you actually do?
Good question. Over the past year we've run about 84 events, i.e. roughly one every four days. That breaks down to 10 movie club nights, 9 fikas, 8 book clubs, 8 walks and outdoor outings, 7 luncheons, 7 after-works, 6 Swedish conversation practice sessions, 5 museum/culture tours, 4 table talks, 4 workshops and talks, and a handful of bigger seasonal or one-off things (our 115th anniversary/FAWCO conference, the AGM, new-member mingles). It's less a formal program and more a standing invitation to have plans in this city. Check What We Do for a selection of our events.
Do I have to be American to join?
You should be a current or former American citizen. If you're not American but have a strong connection to the US (a spouse, work, or family, for example), we'd still love to hear from you. Non-American membership is capped at 25% of the club under our bylaws, so this is sometimes managed on a case by case basis, but it's always worth reaching out.
Is it just for young professionals, or students, or...?
Neither, really. Our members span all ages and stages: students, professionals, retirees, longtime Stockholm residents, and total newcomers. What we have in common is being American women (or having a strong US connection) building a life here.
Trying it out first
What if I just want to see what it's like before I commit?
Totally normal. Follow us on Instagram to get a feel for the club, or come along to a Fika or After Work as a guest first. No pressure, no pitch.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Members can invite guests to any monthly program, with one exception: the Annual General Meeting is members only.
What membership includes
Do I get a vote in how the club is run?
Yes. Members can vote on club matters, hold office, and attend the AGM, so it's your club to help shape.
Am I automatically a FAWCO member too?
Yes. AWC Stockholm is a long-standing member of FAWCO (the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas), and your AWC membership includes FAWCO membership automatically, no extra form, no extra cost.
That gives you access to FAWCO's network of member clubs in more than 28 countries, its annual conferences and regional meetings.
Membership in AWC Stockholm also gives you access to FAWCO Foundation's Education Awards, which you, your children, or your grandchildren may be eligible to apply for after being a member in good standing for at least 12 months.
Cost and timing
What does membership cost?
Current fees are listed on our Join Us page, since they're reviewed periodically and we'd rather point you to the up to date number than risk quoting an old one here. Membership includes access to all club activities and events, the monthly newsletter, our members-only WhatsApp community, and the member directory.
What's the membership year?
Our membership year runs October 1 through September 30. You pay one flat fee, no matter when you join.
- Join between October and March: your membership lasts until the end of that September.
- Join on or after April 1: your membership lasts until the end of the following September, so you don't pay a full fee for just a few months.
Example: if you join in February 2027, you're a member through September 30, 2027. If you join in May 2027, you're a member through September 30, 2028.
